Learning Influences: Honoring Language, Culture, and Family Background
Children learn best when their home culture and language are respected in the classroom. Family values, traditions, and everyday routine shape a child’s understanding of the world. At Chrysalis, we invite families to share their language, holidays, and cultural practices, so we can integrate them into learning activities. For instance, during a unit on food or any celebration, we encourage families to share favorite recipes, allowing children to see their cultures represented and valued. This approach supports typical development by enhancing self-esteem and encourages children with developmental delays to engage more confidently. For example- a child who is shy or has social anxiety but becomes more willing to participate during a classroom celebration of their family’s holiday. When teachers incorporate familiar songs, foods, or traditions, the child may feel a stronger sense of belonging and confidence, which encourages them to join group activities, great peers, or share stories related to their culture.
For providing this experience teachers receive ongoing professional development on culturally responsive teaching so that all children whether they are dual-language learners, have special needs, or are typically developing feel included and understood.
